Thrifty Thursday: spoon art painting project

Well, the last Etsy orders have been shipped out, the shops are closed... and it feels wonderfulllll.  I've spent the last few days cleaning, organizing, and purging junk after a fabulously fun, loud and hectic Christmas. (I hope yours was awesome, too!)  It's so refreshing!   While doing a little digital housekeeping, I came across some tutorials I had written, but never published.  A few needed a little tweaking --  a photo here and there, some edits, whatever.  So, I'll try to get those shared with you guys when I can!  I hope you enjoy this fun, super-easy project like we did.

Closing the refabulous and Acorn doors

Friends, I have decided to close my Etsy shops indefinitely after Christmas.  It was a hard decision to make, since refabulous has been a part of my life for over 9 years.  I have met so many amazing people, and made some lovely and true friends through Etsy, and some customers have actually become my good friends.  Funny how that happens.

Fool me twice: Craft fair FAIL #2

I thought I'd never, ever do another craft fair after my first experience was such a hugely epic FAIL.  But then this awesome opportunity was presented to me a few weeks ago -- a free booth, at a huge, well-advertised, and well-established craft fair, promising thousands of customers.  After some prayer, consideration, and some loving encouragement from family and friends, I decided to go for it!  I mean, what could go wrong??
We'll get to that in a minute.

So here's what happenend. . . .

Sneak peeks and new refabulous lovelies

It's been a crazy week, my friends!  Somewhere in between finishing the t-shirt quilt, dropping said quilt and my dear daughter off at her new college, and then running to Dallas for more testing for Donovan, I managed to begin listing some fresh new items in my refabulous shop! Yippeeee!  It feels really good to be working and sewing again.

Wanna peek at those listings?

Here we go!  A few of the new listings. . . .

{oops! this one sold while I was writing this post!} :)

The t-shirt quilt I didn't want to make: tutorial for t-shirt quilt squares

Somehow, my children have gotten the bizarre idea that when they move out of our home and on their own, that I'll make them a t-shirt quilt from their childhood and favorite t-shirts.  Now, I don't know how this legend began, or how I became a part of this legend, but I honestly wanted no part of it.  The thought of wrangling a bunch of smelly old t-shirts into a stretchy monster blanket sounded like a nightmare to me.

What's a mama to think?

How's your summer going, friends?  Ours has been pretty low-key... and odd.  We're having a little fun, with some school (always, with the schooool,) library trips, ice cream eating, some bowling. . .

and tree climbing. . .

and worm catching. . .

and waiting.
Lots of waiting for the unknown.

Some of you know that my little boy is sick.

Attempting kombucha, part 3: drinking and hotels

You guys, I can't brew enough, or fast enough, to keep these Monkeys happy. . . .

 kid-approved.

It's delicious!  I had no idea anyone would like it, much less fight over the last bottle in the fridge.  (For real.  Like, melt-downs and stomping when someone took "their" bottle of kombucha.  Oops.)

I've been brewing kombucha continuously since March.  (You can read about my first attempt HERE, and an update HERE.)  I've learned a lot over the past few months about brewing kombucha tea, and wanted to share. . . .

My first craft show... was a disaster

My first, and probably last, craft show was last weekend, and it was an epic fail.

Attempting kombucha, part 2: bottling and refreshing

Yesterday was day 14 of fermentation for my first kombucha brew, and the taste was perfectly sweet and tart, like an apple cider.  The kids, who all talked trash about my gross "aliens" (aka the SCOBY) loved it!  Plus, the ph level is right at 3.0, so I figured it was time to bottle the brew for its second fermentation.

Attempting kombucha: the first brew

Six months ago, when Donovan was first suspected to have an autoimmune disease, our pediatrician recommended that we start brewing and drinking kombucha to help support his immune system.  Our doctor brews it himself, and sings the praises of the beneficial probiotics abounding in this fermented sweet tea.  I researched it some, and read about the whole process.  It's not hard, but I was a little overwhelmed at first with Donovan's diagnosis and new diet to take on any additional projects.  Now that things have calmed down a bit, we took the plunge and decided to start a continuous brew. . . .

PLEASE NOTE:  I have never made kombucha before, and honestly, I don't know what I'm doing, other than trying to follow the instructions that were included with my starter kit.  So I'm not offering instructions on HOW to brew kombucha, but simply illustrating how I attempted to brew kombucha this time.  :)

Decluttering, and it's SALE time!

Hi, friends!  I hope you're all staying warm and enjoying your January so far!  Does anyone really enjoy January?  Is January even an enjoyable month?  I'm not sure.  But here in west Texas, we've been enjoying (there's that word again) unseasonably warm weather.  Like, in the 60's during the day.  Sometimes the 70's!  What in the world?  And I'll admit that I ENJOY the boys playing outside all afternoon, so I guess there's that.

Their outside excursions give me small blocks of time to wade through my neglected sewing room.  I say neglected, because all summer long, I sewed in my dining room.  (It's WAY too hot to work in my un-air conditioned sewing shed in the summer.)  So instead of keeping my sewing room neat and organized, I just tossed my fabrics and junk on the ironing board. . .

AcornKid is here!

Time for that big announcement!

I've been sewing for kids for a while, and getting paid for sewing for kids for several months now.  I LOVE IT.  Don't get me wrong... I very much love my eco-sewing gig and am not quitting that in any way any time soon.  But there's something about clothing the little ones that makes my heart so happy.

Brendan's progress and Donovan's diet

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas and a very happy new year!  Ours was wonderfully loud and chaotic, as always.  I know I've been quiet here on the blog lately, and for that I apologize.  Here's a quick update on a couple of things that have happened since we last chatted. . . .

Brendan's progress. . .

waiting for the doctor last week

His progress since his leg surgery has been nothing short of amazing, that's for sure.
